ancient roman Etiquette
Banquets and feasts were a big part of Roman culture, but how did people act at these? Greeks had started showing more interested in the actual meals than in the conversation happening around it Banquets became party's with people laying down on precious cloths over mattresses , leaning on comfortable pillows, and eating.. But it wasn't always like that. Romans would wear a light cloth or a VERY light toga. Fighting, surprisingly was tolerated. If two men got into an argument, it was O.K for them to start a fight. Since men were also known as getting VERY intoxicated at these banquets, which also could have lead to more violence. In Ancient writings, the men were described as getting so drunk that they broke their own chamber pots on the heads of the people around them. After each course and meal, the Romans washed their hands and mouth with napkins. not very different from us. Also after meals, everything that could not have been eaten, bones, shells, etc , was swept away by the slaves.
